According to Nancy Farris' *Maya Society Under Colonial Rule* the ancient
Maya's "entire view of time was based on the conviction that each of their
twenty-year katun periods repeated itself with the same recurring events at
256-year intervals". It must be enormously comforting to have such a
certain knowledge of how things will turn out that you don't even feel
compelled to offer evidence to support your assertions. The problem, of
course, is that one can only maintain that sort of certainty by completely
denying the agency of the people involved. If you want to piss out the
ember of hope generated by the Zapatistas you'll have to come up with
something a little more substantive. Until then ...
