Menchu calls for dialogue with Indians in Chiapas
08:43 p.m Mar 25, 1998 Eastern

MEXICO CITY, March 25 (Reuters) - Guatemalan Mayan Rigoberta Menchu,
Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1992, called on Wednesday for greater
consultations with native Indians in Mexico's troubled state of
Chiapas.

The government has put forward a series of proposals on how to
reach peace with rebel Indians in the state.

But Menchu said the Mayan Indians in Mexico had been excluded from
the peace process.

``It is natural that after centuries of cheating, lying and mockery
that the indigenous people mistrust the intentions of those who
talk about our affairs,'' Menchu said in statement released at a
news conference.

``Because of this we think it is very important that there be a
consultation with the Indigenous communities,'' she said.

Paramilitary gunmen killed 45 Indians on Dec. 22 in the Chiapas
village of Acteal. The dead were supporters of the state's Zapatista
National Liberation Army (EZLN) rebels.

The killings reopened still raw wounds in Chiapas, where EZLN rebels
rose up in a bloody rebellion in 1994. ^REUTERS@
