Dear Steve,
interesting questions. I have some little light to shed:
(1) "Reeve" will be in NYC for a month or so, so this would be a good time
to engage him in discussion. Write him c/o me and I will have him reply
to the list.
(2) The question about "soft Maoism" is interesting. I met only a few
people in Mexico who "went to the people" in the countryside in the early
70s--the ones I knew were young and inexperienced rather than "soft". I'm
thinking in particular of one woman who went to organize the armed
struggle and was shocked to find herself regarded, as an educated person,
as a kind of magician, expected to cure illness etc. --By the way, the
people I met around LC and autonomia in the mid to late 70s in Italy were
also not "soft Maoists"--more like "libertarian Stalinists".
(3) I was not very impressed with the complaint that Reeve/Deneuve did not
have archival evidence of Marcos's origins in the maoist-guevarist foco
effort. of course, a couple of Parisian nonacademics are not going to do
better than speculation--perhaps only Marcos and his former friends in the
philosophy (?) department can do better--but that speculation makes sense,
has not been contradicted by anyone with knowledge of the story, and is,
so far as I know, unchallenged by any alternative contextualizing account.
So what's the big deal?
Paul
