By coincidence, I just got back from a visit to Sudbury, Ontario, which,
besides being home to Laurentian University, is one of the great nickel
mining centers of the world. Miners there start at $23/hr, and the typical
miner makes $80,000-100,000 a year. No women underground, though; I suspect
that if they were allowed to, lots would give up the toilet brush for a
trip a mile or two underground.
