AFTER 17 YEARS OF DICTATORSHIP IN CHILE, THE MURDERER PINOCHET WANTS TO BE A
'DEMOCRAT' IN THE SENATE.  WE MUST STOP HIM!

Please send your NAME  and that of your ORGANISATION  to

to the government of Eduardo Frei, together with a message of protest
and opposition to the dictator taking a seat as Senator For Life in the
Chilean Parliament (see

Dear comrades and friends:

All fervent fighters for human rights throughout the world must help
stop the abhorrent
actions of the dictator Augusto Pinochet, the same who for 17 years held
absolute power
over the Chilean people with his systematic violation of the most
elemental of
individual and collective rights, exercising power against all human
values.

In accordance with the Constitution in place in Chile since it was imposed by
his
tyranny in 1980, the dictator will on the 11th of March take his seat as Senator
For
Life with the total disapproval of the Chilean people.  An endless list of
organisations
have come together to oppose this designation, among them The Movement for
National
Dignity, The Movement for a Democratic Chile, The Coordinating Committee of
Popular
Organisations and the "Pata en la Raja" Coordinating Committee.  As a result of
this a
number of national protests are being organised to oppose this most abhorrent
designation.

It for this reason that we are calling upon people throughout the world to
oppose this
act, one that goes against all of those who seek justice and a society where
equality
and fraternity truly reign.

Pinochet cannot be a part of a society that calls itself democratic.  It is
totally contradictory within a democracy for there to be designated senators,
and even more so senators for life, without popular participation.  Pinochet's
presence in the Chilean Parliament will cripple any attempt to build a real
democracy and is evidence of the fact that the current democracy is one
controlled by those who have exercised power violently since 1973, when Pinochet
self-proclaimed himself head of government.

Should this attempt come to fruition, it will once again show the current
Chilean government to be an accomplice both in the maintaining of human rights
violations and in obstructing truth and justice for the thousands of tortured,
murdered and detained-disappeared.  It will thus show its approval for the
savage actions of the brutal neo-liberal capitalism imposed by Pinochet's
dictatorship, which today keeps large sectors of Chilean society in poverty.

Querid@s compañeras, compañeros, Amigos, Amigas:

Ponemos en conocimiento de todos los fervientes luchadores por los derechos
humanos en el mundo que evitemos la aberrante acción del dictador Augusto
Pinochet, que mantuvo por 17 años  el poder absoluto sobre los chilenos, con su
sistemática violación a los más elementales
derechos individuales y colectivos, ejerciendo el poder contra todo valor
humano.

Este dictador, de acuerdo a la constitucion que rige en Chile que bajo su
tiranía impuso en 1980, el día 11 de Marzo asumirá como Senador Vitalicio, bajo
la total desaprobación del pueblo de Chile, para ello se han constituido un sin
fin de organizaciones que se oponen a este nombramiento, entre ellas tenemos El
Movimiento por la Dignidad Nacional, El Movimiento por un Chile Democrático, La
Coalisión de Organizaciones Populares: Coordinadora Pata en la Raja, por lo
mismo se están impulsando una serie de movilizaciones nacionales para oponerse a
este tan aberrante nombramiento.

Es por ello que llamamos a la humanidad a oponerse a este intento que va contra
toda la humanidad que busca justicia y la verdadera sociedad donde reine la
igualdad y la fraternidad.

Pinochet no debe ser parte de una sociedad que se dice democrática. Resulta
totalmente contradictoria con una democracia la existencia de senadores
designados, y menos aún senadores vitalicios sin la participación popular. La
existencia de Pinochet en el parlamento de Chile negará todo intento de
construir una real democracia y se evidencia en la realidad misma que esta
democracia es una "democracia tutelada" por aquellos que ejercieron el poder a
sangre y fuego, como lo sucedido en Chile después de 1973, donde Pinochet se
autodesigno jefe de
gobierno.

De concretarse este hecho, demostraran una vez más la acción complice del actual
gobierno de Chile en la  mantención de las violaciones a los derechos humanos y
su papel complice en no lograr  la verdad y la justicia por los miles de
torturados,asesinados y detenidos desaparecidos, demostrarando su actitud
beneplacita con la acción salvaje del capitalismo neoliberal impuesto por la
dictadura de Pinochet,  que hoy mantiene en la pobreza a grandes sectores de la
sociedad chilena.
