Re: AUT: Patriarchy

In a message dated 98-02-01 20:33:03 EST, Katha write:

<< As for Papua -- well, maybe we should all talk more about places we
know more about! Monty read an article in harvard news that says Papuan
women are worse off; I read an article in the Times about a Papuan (I
think) girl who got some education and was emboldened to resist the old
brutal marriage-by- capture custom. I only went on about India because
Luther B. mentioned Indian feminists. But I'm happy to stop. >>

No Katha, I read about India in the Harvard mag, put it in because it was
raised. The article on Papua was a detailed piece in latest Midnight Notes by
a long-term resident who has carefully studied WB/IMF policies, effects, and
resistance to them. They cause lots of trouble, intensify other problems,
hardly provide a solution. I already said I concurred that with capitalism
(often by struggles of workers, women, etc.) has come some increased freedoms
I too agree with. But capitalism has made a lot of situations worse. Period.
