PT boats aren't built anymore ... they're obsolete. When they were built,
they were built with the intention of sinking destroyers, light and heavy
cruisers, and (if they were lucky) an occasional battleship.
Their primary weapon (like that of submarines of the same period)
was the self-propelled torpedo. Generally the boats were made out of wood
and were (along with their crews) considered to be "expendable".

[if you like war movies, there was a good battle scene with PT boats in
"In Harm's Way"].
