>>Workers<< >>strike<< Australian steel maker to protest shutdown

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- About 20,000 steel >>workers<< launched a
national 24-hour >>strike<< Thursday to voice their anger at Broken Hill
Proprietary Co. Ltd.'s decision to close its Newcastle steel mill by 1999.

The shutdown of the Newcastle mill will cost more than 2,000 BHP jobs, and
thousands more in a ripple effect in the local economy.

The >>strike<< hit BHP six steel operations throughout Australia. In
addition, the Maritime Union of Australia said Newcastle dock >>workers<<
were refusing services to all BHP ships in solidarity with the work
stoppage.

BHP, Australia's largest industrial and natural resources company, is
shutting down most of its Australian and New Zealand steel mills and
shifting to overseas production.
