LIVERPOOL DOCKERS FIGHT-A NEW STAGE REACHED
Dear Friends and Fellow Workers,
The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company and the Transport and General Workers'
Union have each recently paid =A325,000 to financial advisors KPMG Peat
Marwick to draw up a company plan for the self-employment of the dockers in
terminals where they could easily face dismissal again because the work
could be transferred to other ports, whilst scabs, casual labour, hired by
Drake International labour agency remain in the dockers' jobs at the
Seaforth Container Terminal.
On 24-25 May the dockers delegates will be at the International Dockworkers
Conference in Montreal - this is the third conference in the course of the
19 months dispute. The Liverpool dockers will report on the decisions of th=
e
Montreal conference in the new stage of their fight and discuss their plans
for the future of their newspaper the Dockers' Charter and the People's
Charter for Social Justice at a public meeting on Saturday, 31 May 1997
(details below). =20
The People's Charter for Social Justice was launched by the dockers' shop
stewards during the hugely popular March & Rally on 12 April. The struggle
to implement its demands will be an important step towards uniting the
labour movement and all others in struggle against capital.
Now this new stage has been reached it is vital that as many activists as
possible attend the meeting, details of which are as follows:
PUBLIC MEETING
on
Saturday, 31 May 1997 =20
11am-5pm
at
Conway Halls, Red Lion Square, London
(Holborn Tube)
Victory to the Liverpool dockers!
In solidarity,
Keith Standring
