The point about handing over control of the interest rate policy over to a
board of 'wise men' centred on the Bank of England is to make a step
towards European monetary union. As regards the "surrendering of
soveriegnty" this is to redolent of tory euro-scepticism to go by without
remark. What is sovereignty? According to the British constitution it is
"the crown in parliament" which means the integration of parliament into
judiciary, army, church, cabinet office and prime ministers office. Quite a
complex web of inter-relations which have given the British state its
stability over the last two hundred years. The working class has no need to
defend parliament against "financial capital" as it is a bourgeois
institution. The "democratic process" is farce, manipulated by the media
that masks the dictatorship of capital.

In the fullness of time, the Labour Party will (most likely) plan to go
into the European single currency, and put the matter to a referendum.
When such an eventuality occurs, we should not try and defend the
sovereignty of the old nation state against the New European Order, but
pose the question of communism, of tha aboloition of wage labour and the
abolition of money.
