Handbills warn of transit driver sickout in S.F.

The San Francisco transit agency was bracing Thursday for a possible driver
sickout. Word of the wildcat >>strike<<, scheduled for today, has appeared
in fliers and at bus yards across the city. The San Francisco Chronicle
reported it was triggered by the firing of a veteran driver involved in a
recent accident. Municipal Railway Chief Emilio Cruz said extra drivers
would be called in to help replace absent >>workers<<. [N970]

Suit against police
reinstated by court

A state appeals court in San Francisco has reinstated a lawsuit by a woman
who accused Antioch police of bungling a 1993 hostage situation that ended
when her husband killed their two children and himself. A jury should
decide whether police acted reasonably when they set a 10-minute deadline
for the surrender of Joel Souza, the 1st District Court of Appeal said in a
ruling made public Thursday. [N971]
