Liverpool Dockers and Reclaim The Streets
Joint Statement
Sacked Liverpool dockers today re-iterated their support and respect
for Reclaim the Streets, and all those ecological groups who took part
in the peaceful demonstration for social justice on Saturday 12th
April.
Prior to our celebration in London, press coverage in the capital
appeared intent on provoking a climate of violence in which a "poll-
tax" riot was to be expected. Such irresponsible journalism often
manufactures events before they materialise. Similarly, the police
embarked upon arrests on the Friday afternoon for "incitement to cause
affray" when supporters distributed a free broadsheet. Such
suppression of free speech only served to heighten tension prior to
Saturday's demonstration. On Saturday, others were arrested for
"attempted murder". Both sets of charges were dropped.
The presence of over 1,000 riot-police on the march destroyed the
peaceful carnival atmosphere that had previously been planned jointly
with the Metropolitan Police. Whole sections of the capital had been
sealed off with riot police refusing marchers the right to leave the
area. Thus, an atmosphere of fear and intimidation was allowed to
dominate the march.
Nevertheless, isolated incidents gained notoriety whilst evidence of
police violence against peaceful demonstrators went unreported.
The sacked Liverpool dockers have always welcomed Reclaim's support
ensuring a mutual respect that after this march has been strengthened.
The Liverpool dockers wish to express their gratitude to the London
Support Group for organising a most successful demonstration in which
over 20,000 people expressed their demands for social justice.
