In celebrating the "right to laziness", some left libertarians contributed
a critique of labor in capitalist societies. However, other circles
glorified the artisan or, like the IWW, presented the collective worker in
the image of Hercules.
Today, as the machine is progressively replacing human beings, including in
strategic decisions, one may imagine a world with a zero sum of employed
people. Exit Marx and his view that work is the essence of man.
This raises many questions : should we fight against unemployment or for
job security, etc.
The serious psychological problems created by unemployment, that may even
result in suicide, call for a more radical disenchantment of labor. It is
time to find out that work is not necessarily a positive passion, that an
individual may achieve his/herself in other ways than by his functions, job
status and income. The critique of those people who identify with their job
or their profession already appears in works of fiction. Perhaps should it
be enlarged to a disenchantment of work.
But if we do not spend all our time in front of TV or with the armies of
tourists, we must invent new forms of social links and discover the utopian
dimensions of other aspects of our lives.
Any comments ?
