Chicago Immigrant in Sanctuary under attack once again.
Adalberto United Methodist church, who opened it's door to Elvira Arrellano
to provide sanctuary against court ordered self-deportation and now houses
Flor Crisostomo, who also received a court ordered self-deportation in
January of this year, has received information from a reliable source that
Homeland Security has decided to call off its two-year truce with sanctuary
churches. According to this source, on the eve of the May 1st marches
throughout the country, Homeland Security has handed the case of Flor
Crisostomo, to the U.S. Marshals office so that they can obtain and execute
a warrant for her arrest in the church.
Flor Crisostomo and leaders of the church respond to this apparent decision
by Homeland Security at a press conference today. Community and church
leaders reaffirmed their commitment to stand with Flor in solidarity.
".you'll have to go through me and my congregation first to get to Flor"
stated the Rev. Dan Dale of Wellington Avenue Church, one of hundreds of
sanctuary churches that have sent message of solidarity to Flor and the
brave members of Adalberto Church.
The timing of Flor's purported arrest is obviously timed to send a message
of fear to the thousands of immigrants and activists who plan to join this
year's May Day march. "Let's not give them the pleasure of our fear, let's
come out and march on May 1st and show we are not afraid, we will not
self-deport, we will not allow them to destroy our economies and not demand
a right to work and feed our families, either here in the U.S or back home."
Show your support in two concrete ways:
-March on May 1st wherever you are!
-And, if you're in Chicago, help form a human chain of support around Flor.
If you have time to give day or night, please let us know and we'll arrange
for you to spend your time at Adalberto Church with Flor. In the meantime,
send your requests to help in Chicago to msn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx .
See you at the march! See you at Adalberto Church!
