USA Kicking Against South Stream
The USA tried to talk the Bulgarian government into
withdrawing from the South Stream Project, the Reuters
press wire service writes, quoting their sources in
Sofia.
According to a Reuters writer, the Bulgarian
government's rationale for their hesitation - the
desire of the Bulgarian party to hold a 51-percent
stake in the project - was a plain cover in the course
of the negotiations.
The USA is deeply concerned that agreements of Russia
with Bulgaria and Serbia on the South Stream might
enhance Moscow's influence in energy supplies to
Europe, the Reuters article further stated.
The author also writes, quoting sources from Sofia and
Washington D. C., that such agreements may also become
levers for political pressure.
Some Western diplomats in Sofia have also shared
America's concern with Russia's intentions to cement
its energy presence in the Balkans.
A spokesman of the US Department of State has told
Reuters that the USA still regards the Nabucco Project
as the best option for the diversification of energy
supplies in Europe.
