China and India Marching Toward Asia's Century
By Sawraj Singh
-India and China should march together to Asia's
century. A trilateral alliance of Russia, China, and
India will also help to restore the balance of power
in the world.
The Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's trip to
China has proved to be a very big step in the march
towards Asia's century.
The Chinese leaders also agreed with him that
relations between China and India are not only
important for the two giant neighbors, but also are
important to maintain peace, harmony, and balance of
power in the region and the world.
It appears that India has finally realized that it
needs to shift its Western-leaning policy and make
Asia and the East the next most important components
of its policy.
Trade is the most visible indicator of improving
relations between the two countries. The trade goal
set up earlier was reached ahead of schedule.
The goal of increasing trade between the two countries
to 40 billion dollars a year by 2010 had to be revised
upward because last year, the trade went up to 37
billion dollars. The new goal is 60 billion dollars by
2010. Last year, the trade was 12 billion dollars
surplus in favor of China.
India is very keen to reduce the trade deficit. The
Indian businessmen want to sell more to China to
reduce the trade deficit. The Chinese seem very
willing to help reduce the trade deficit.
China has used trade as an important aspect of
improving its relations with other countries. China
has become the largest trading partner of Japan and
South Korea. Japan is now the largest foreign investor
in China.
India and China have to resolve their border dispute.
They went to war in 1962 as a result of the border
dispute.
There have been ongoing efforts to resolve the dispute
amicably. During this trip, both sides felt that
sincere efforts to resolve the dispute have to be
continued and both sides looked optimistic in finding
a mutually acceptable solution. Both sides also agreed
that the border dispute should not become an
impediment in the improvement of relations.
There was a decision to continue the military
cooperation also.
Last year, they held joint military exercises. There
will be more joint military exercises in the future.
The senior leaders and foreign ministers will exchange
visits next year.
Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has invited Prime Minister
Dr. Singh to China to attend the Asia - Europe summit
to be held in Beijing in October. Dr. Singh invited
the Chinese Prime Minister to visit India.
China and India signed eleven agreements in different
fields. These agreements will increase cooperation and
help in exchanging experience in the different fields.
Cultural exchanges and people to people contacts will
also be promoted.
China may also help India to get a permanent seat in
the Security Council of the United Nations.
Both countries also agreed to cooperate in the field
of non-military nuclear energy. China will have an
India festival and India will have a China festival in
2010.
The improved relations between the two countries will
help in a big way with the transition from a unipolar,
Western-dominated world to a multipolar world.
The rapid growth that both countries are experiencing
represents the rise of Asia and the East.
India and China should march together to Asia's
century. A trilateral alliance of Russia, China, and
India will also help to restore the balance of power
in the world.
