Yeah well, technology & media got the best of the haj too!

According to SaudiAramco's house organ magazine, the pilgrims come on
pre-arranged charter flights with specially trained guides who escort
them  almost every step of the way and EVERY SINGLE PILGRIM is Iris
scanned. Think of a religious DisneyLand, like the 60s, when they had
'attitude inspectors' who kept the hippies from hanging out with Dopey
Dwarf (and later, gays were singled out)

Further, the influx of oil money over the years has created a certain
degree of western style affluence amongst a privileged few... the same
privileged few that want the pilgrims to be iris scanned, and in a
very direct, real sense, control a muslim of ANY NATIONALITY's ability
to take the pilgrimage... required to be a good muslim, if that person
might be considered an enemy of the state.

An example of the western affluence of which I speak, as exhibited by
the affluent of Dubai:
