I am afraid there is some confusion here. By definition, "hegemony" 
cannot be exerted as a reflexive verb. Nobody "hegemonizes" him or 
herself. 

US is the most important country to check not "US hegemony" but the 
hegemony of the USAmerican bourgeoisie over its subordinate classes, 
which empowers that bourgeoisie to exert its hegemony through "US" as 
a whole on the global level. 

At this level, that USAmerican bourgeoisie operates through the US 
State or under auspices or coordination of that State. Thus it is 
also important to study those countries which, as such countries and 
in spite of their social structure and dominant mode of production, 
confront and thus "check" the power of "US" on the global scenario.

Even to check the hegemony of the USAmerican bourgeoisie _within_ the 
frontiers of USA, it is good to realize that others check it  outside 
and make US workers, etc., clearly conscious that this implies a 
weakening of their exploiters, etc.
