Deployment of US military bases in Bulgaria is not
directed at Russia in any way: Foreign Minister

-US plans to station elements of anti-missile defense
system in Europe were based on bilateral agreements,
which later could become part of NATO collective
security.

Sofia/Oslo - The agreements on deploying US military
bases in Bulgaria and Romania were among Russia’s
arguments in declaring a moratorium on Conventional
Forces in Europe Treaty, Bulgarian Foreign Minister
Ivaylo Kalfin confirmed after the end of the informal
meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Oslo, BNR
informed.

Minister Kalfin said the deployment of US service men
in Bulgaria was not directed at Russia in any way.

He noted that the US plans to station elements of
anti-missile defense system in Europe were based on
bilateral agreements, which later could become part of
NATO collective security.

Minister Kalfin stressed NATO members expected that
Russia would continue to fulfill its commitments.

He added NATO’s joint statement was that UN Security
Council resolution on Kosovo was needed.

Martti Ahtisaari’s blueprint is the best thing that
can be achieved now, Minister Kalfin noted.
