200 demonstrate against radar base
Prague) - Some 200 people...protested against the
planned stationing of a U.S. radar base in the Czech
Republic at a Communist organised demonstration in
Prague today.
"The government has started negotiating (about the
base) behind the backs of the people," Communist
(KSCM) deputy Katerina Konecna said.
She said that the base will make Czechs into a blind
instrument of U.S. politics.
The Czech government started to officially negotiate
about the base in March. The radar base is to
stationed in the Brdy military district some 60km
southwest of Prague.
Another base with 10 defence missiles is to be built
in neighbouring Poland.
Both bases are to be part of the U.S. missile shield
that is to protect against missiles possibly launched
by hostile countries, such as Iran and North Korea.
Rudolf Prevratil, from the No to Bases initiative
launched last June, said that people reject the
militarisation of politics that invents the external
and internal enemy and that restricts democracy.
He said that the issue need not to be resolved even
after U.S. President Geroge W. Bush's planned visit to
Prague in June.
"The resistance (to the U.S. shield) is worldwide and
it will continue," he said.
The organisers also gathered signatures against the
base. They said that the petition has already been
signed by 90,000 people....
The radar base is also opposed by the opposition
Social Democrats (CSSD) and people from the towns and
villages around the possible future site.
The CSSD and KSCM want a referendum to be held on the
base.
The senior government Civic Democrats, Christian
Democrats and Greens, who have some partial
reservations, support the U.S. project.
