[A-List] RE: Workers World Editorial: Why Virginia Tech killings happened

To put it in perspective somewhat, I turn on the news and see that
over 30 died in Iraq today--and this seems like a DAILY occurrence in
US-occupied Iraq.

When it was reported that the shooter possibly wasn't a student at VT,
I said, NO WAY. I just know this will be a student.

Now getting the little pieces of the guy's life from such really awful
efforts like CNN (crank up the 'somber massacre aftermath' music) I
can almost intuit a bio: Asian-American for all intents and purposes,
wanted to major in science but probably washed out and ended up in a
crap English program at a university that is more a science and
engineering institution. Like so many kids who can't compete socially,
triaged to irrelevance.

That also helps to psychologize this guy's torment--even if it doesn't
rationalize the taking of so much life that had nothing whatsoever to
do with it. But the simple fact of life at VPI & SU is that the
population is to quite an extent skewed to the MALE side. Competition
for females for sex and romance--or whatever else you want to call
something that takes up a huge amount of time amongst populations
18-24 at hellhole university campuses--is FIERCE.

Even if this kid had gone to neighboring Radford where the population
is skewed somewhat similarly the other way, he would have found
himself in competition with a lot of VPI males.
Add depression to the point of paranoia and access to guns, it really
isn't that surprising that something like this happened. Maybe my
reading of it is totally off, but I can't help but think this was a
person with the potential to find out a purpose for living, but it all
went totally wrong. Unfortunately, a large state university in the
middle of nowhere is not a good place to figure out what it is all
about.
