[A-List] Re: Private equity vs. hedge funds

I won't intrude on MS's recent thread, but instead go back to the
private equity vs. hedge fund one. Interesting as well that the oil
sands are a keen interest of hedge funds.

The hooks:

The oil sands of Alberta, Canada have the potential to produce 300
billion barrels of oil from its massive reserve and is one of the
world's largest reserves, containing 1.7 trillion barrels of oil.
Hence, Alberta is believed to hold more than all reserves of the OPEC
countries combined. With the already established and flourishing
energy infrastructure of Fort McMcurray coupled with the politically
stable, American friendly, government, the Canadian oil sands reserves
is increasingly becoming an attractive investment option for US
financial institutions.>>

Come to this symposium to learn why this form of unconventional gas
will fit your energy portfolio and understand the factors that make
this oil play a promising investment!>>

...learn how experts use oil sands as an inflation hedge.>>

Is this venture capital put to 'productive' use or just more speculative leveraged 'investing' in the current credit bubble? I see a lot of the latter.
