Nonviolent demonstration at Huwara checkpoint links plight of Palestinians to that of Native Americans
PNN, (Nablus) Amin Abu Wardeh Monday, 15 January 2007
Dozens of Palestinians staged a nonviolent demonstration at Huwara Checkpoint in southern Nablus Sunday dressed in a loose version of the traditional outfits of Native Americans. The point was to make the connection between the colonization taking place in Palestine and that which happened in the Americas while the US Secretary of State was nearby.
Israeli forces occupying the northern West Bank attempted to block media coverage of the demonstration and quickly closed the checkpoint.
The Palestinian Dama Center representatives told reporters that they organized the event as âan expression of the will of the vast majority of Palestinians and their refusal to accept the daily practice of the occupation.â This protest is part of a larger program entitled, â30 Days against the Barriers.â
At least 300 people demonstrated, with foreign and Israeli supporters backing up the Palestinians. Israeli soldiers tried to stop them by force, but the crowd sat on the ground for two hours, intermittently chanting anti-colonial messages to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who was meeting with President Abbas in Ramallah at the time.
The Director of the Youth Program in the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees said that the series of demonstrations are being organized as nonviolent resistance against all Israeli checkpoints. The 30 days of events are sponsored by private institutions in the city and health and social work NGOs.
