Venezuela Denounces US Meddling in Zulia
CARACAS, March 6.-- Venezuelan Parliamentarian William Lara denounced
the presence of US Ambassador William Brownfield in meetings where
secessionist plans to split the State of Zulia away from the Venezuelan
nation were promoted.
Lara, who represents the 5th Republic Movement political party, told
reporters that Brownfield met in Maracaibo with executives of a
political organization that goes by the name of Rumbo Propio (Our
Course) to talk about a secessionist movement. Maracaibo is Venezuela's
second largest city and is located in the state of Zulia,
Lara described the meetings as an act of treason by the executive
committee of that Rumbo Propio organization, and an open intervention in
Venezuela's internal affairs by the US diplomat, reported Prensa Latina.
Lara demanded that Manuel Rosales, the opposition governor of the
western oil rich state, explain to the people of Venezuela if he and his
party are sponsoring the movement or if it is an isolated position.
"The nation is waiting and we democratically demand that this serious
situation be clarified promptly. It puts its participants in a very
delicate situation, since they seek to cooperate with a foreign power,"
Lara underscored.
The Public Ministry began an investigation on March 2 to determine the
possible crimes committed against the nation's territorial integrity and
national security, as established by the Venezuelan Constitution and the
Penal Code.
On Sunday, President Hugo Chavez assured that the United States
government is behind the attempt to divide the nation and take over its
oil resources, which he said is reaching a daily production of 3,3
million barrels.
