Austrian economists have been writing about the hegemon phenomenon of holding the reserve currency since the early teens and twenties of the 20th century, and they continued writing about it throughout the 20th century and - to this day - continue to do so. Ludwig von Mises, Frederich von Hayek, and Murray Rothbard all contributed extensively to this scholarship. None of which is to demean or diminish the importance of Michael's work - only to say that this is a rich and complex subject whose ill-effects could be seen long before Keynes oversaw the new architecture of Bretton Woods. BTW, Ron Paul is an Austrian, and he has labored in the fields of exposing the fiat scam his entire adult life - in fact, Americans owe their freedom to purchase gold coin to Ron Paul, who worked mightily to undo the outrageous 'crime' of private gold holdings that FDR instituted through legislation in the 1930s. I hope all A-Listers, in particular US A-Listers, have or will take advantage of the opportunity to protect their savings from devaluation with at least a small holding of gold that Ron Paul worked so hard years ago to provide the American public. -Anne

I would like to add that Prof. Michael Hudson, Univ of MI, who wrote a paper in the circa 1971/1972 on post 1971 US balance of payments should be credited with the concept of dollar hegemony. My understanding is that the paper is available in the NYU Business library. The term he prefers for the phenomenon is the "US Treasury Bill Standard" (as in monetary standard). He followed up with a book, Super Imperialsim, published in 1972 which, two/three years ago, is on its second edition.
