...If Quebec 'separates fromt the rest of Canada'..that will be the end of Canada. Welcome to the 51st state...It would probably mean the eventual destruction of Quebec sovereignty as well.

I must confess that I have difficulty in following much of the debate between Macdonald and Jim because of my lack of knowledge of the details. I suspect most of the other non-Canadians on the list have the same difficulty. To turn their debate into something fruitful that we all can follow, here is a question to both of them:
How do we distinguish among sovereignty, self-determination and state?
More specifically, is self-determination possible without sovereignty and sovereignty without state?
Lastly, if Quebec separates from the rest of Canada and becomes a "nation-state," which nation's state will that be?
