just as a quick clarification, the groups on taiwan claiming to be "legitimate" representatives of china are generally NOT the same as those calling for taiwanese independence or "nationhood". in fact, the former position doesn't really even have any currency anymore. most KMT and PFP supporters today don't try to claim representation for the mainland anymore, plus they have generally never tried to advocate a separate "taiwanese" national identity, except in the awkward case of former president li teng-hui. it is the currently ruling DPP and its allies who are the "minan-ization" (taiwan "national" identity) advocates, and in turn are trying to distance themselves from mainland china.
