Re: [A-List] Turkey & the EU
For about 5 years there's been a EU mania here in
Turkey. The media says it is the only hope for the
Turkish people, and the Turkish people wants to join
the EU because to them this means jobs and better
living standards.
Having signed a Customs Union Treaty with the EU
without being a member state , and being the only
candidate state to have done that, Turkey can no
longer be counted as a sovereign state because with
this treaty she accepts the rules set by EU to which
she is not a member. On foreign trade Turkey is
obliged to to what EU says not what its people say.
The campaign to join EU is benefitting the comprador
Turkish bourgeoise and their Western (US &EU)
imperialist masters. Some alternative Turkish
economists (to whom the media rarely listens )say
together with IMF and World Bank politics the Customs
Union treaty is the main reason behind the Great 2001
Economic Crisis. Today the trade deficit is breaking
all time high records , meaning new and deeper
crisis.(who cares as long as we join the EU)
EU hysteria and invasion of Iraq by the US will bring
the Modern Turkey's end . Republic of Turkey will be
history like former Yugoslavia or Iraq or the USSR, if
somethings does not change radically.
That's what I think.

I'd be keen to hear comments on this analysis, esp
from those who know
Turkey well. One, is Turkey (like Poland, eg) still
seen by the US as a
reliable stalking horse in the EU, and two, how does
this "playing nice"
play among different sectors on the Turkish home front
(masses,
military, et al)? Also, how does this sit with the
various populations
in other EU nations?
