[A-List] Iyad Allawi
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3757923.stm
He appears to represent the resultant of forces in quite an
interesting way. A member of the high intelligentsia whose extensive
connections are best placed to promote a liberal bourgeois democracy
under global finance capitalism.
UK sources name his backer as an Iraqi consultant pathologist in
London, and a Google search suggests that *his* wife had connections
with Medical Aid to Iraqi Children in the 90's, but Allawi's lobbying
of US politicians must have been funded from other sources than just
once medical expatriate consultant.
So the CIA and Powell have been winning out over the Pentagon and
Rumsfeld, and the crunch came when poor Chalabi's offices got raided
by people with connections with the old Baath party.
If Allawi is not assassinated, he might just pull of the liberal
imperialist dream.
He is likely to have an impeccable English accent and to be strongly
backed by the Brits, who just might fail to deter him from making a
grand gesture of independence from the Americans, which coincidentally
would get both George Bush and Tony Blair off their electoral hooks.
