Two US soldiers killed in attacks in Iraq

BAGHDAD: Two US soldiers were killed in action in
separate attacks in the northern Iraqi cities of
Samarra and Mosul in the last 24 hours, a US army
spokesman said on Thursday, a foreign news agency
reported.

He gave no other details. It was not clear whether the
deaths had already been included in the Pentagon's
toll, which rose by eight on Wednesday. According to
that toll, at least 93 US soldiers have been killed in
combat in Iraq so far in April.

Czech CNN journalist injured in Fallujah

-He said that several marines had suffered serious
injuries in the attack and that two had later died.
"The exchange of fire lasted all night. I was lucky.
Yesterday doctors took out two pieces of shrapnel from
my back and another from my head near the ear," Etzler
said.

Prague - A Czech television journalist working for US
channel CNN in Iraq has been injured in a grenade
blast in the embattled town of Fallujah, a Czech
newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Tomas Etzler (41), suffered head and back injuries in
the explosion during an attack on about a dozen US
marines in a school in the Sunni bastion west of
Baghdad late on Monday, the daily Lidove Noviny said.

"A huge explosion happened. We were in the dark and
then a big fire suddenly lit things up. It all
happened in a few fractions of a second," Etzler said.

"I realised I was lying on the ground and I had a
crushing pain near my kidney," he added.

He said that several marines had suffered serious
injuries in the attack and that two had later died.

"The exchange of fire lasted all night. I was lucky.
Yesterday doctors took out two pieces of shrapnel from
my back and another from my head near the ear," Etzler
said.

Czech nationals have been advised to leave the
strife-torn country. Hostage-taking by Iraqi
insurgents fighting US-led forces has prompted many
foreigners to flee.

Three other Czech journalists kidnapped in Iraq are
reportedly alive, Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda said
yesterday.

The three newsmen - Michal Kubal (27), Petr Klima
(40), and Vit Pohanka (37) - were kidnapped on Sunday
as they drove towards Amman, according to the Iraqi
taxi company that had been ferrying them to Jordan.

Hostage Killing Fuels Security Fears in Iraq
Peace has become increasingly elusive in Iraq

The killing of an Italian hostage by Iraqi militants
Thursday and two German security workers last week has
heightened security fears for Europeans and other
foreigners working in Iraq.

The crumbling security conditions in Iraq took a turn
for the worse on Thursday after officials in Rome
confirmed the execution of an Italian hostage by Iraqi
militants. It's the first known killing of the some 22
foreigners being held captive by insurgents in Iraq.

The victim, identified as Fabrizio Quattrocchi, was
among a group of four Italian security guards seized
by a previously unknown Iraqi group, the Green
Battalion.

The group, which demanded a withdrawal of U.S. troops
from Iraq, an apology by Italian Prime Minister Silvio
Berlusconi and the release of Iraqi religious clerics,
released a video of the execution. Qatar-based Arabic
television channel Al-Jazeera said it had the video,
but that its contents were too graphic to broadcast.

Italy is the third-largest coalition partner in the
occupation force, with 3,000 soldiers on the ground in
Iraq. Italian Prime Minister Premier Silvio
Berlusconi, who has ruled out pulling out Italian
troops from Iraq, said, "They have cut short a life.
They have not damaged our values and our commitment to
peace."

French journalist freed

Another French television journalist, Alexandre
Jordanov, 40, was released unharmed at a mosque on
Wednesday after a four-day hostage ordeal.

Jordanov, who works for Capa Television in Paris, was
kidnapped Sunday while videotaping a U.S.military
convoy under attack. Jordanov said his abductors
switched his location eight times, passing him from
one armed group to another. "It was: 'We're going to
cut your throat' to 'You're part of the Mossad," '
Jordanov said, referring to the Israeli secret
service....

Security convoy attacked by Iraqis

The two Germans, both part of the elite GSG-9 unit of
Germany's Federal Border Guard assigned to protect the
German embassy in Baghdad, went missing a week ago
after their security convoy was attacked by Iraqi
insurgents as it traveled through Iraq on its way from
Amman, Jordan. The security convoy was accompanying a
group of German diplomats and members of the German
Federal Intelligence Agency.

The two Germans, Tobias Ritrath, 25, and Thomas
Haffenker, 38, are believed to have been killed by the
insurgents and were, according to eyewitness reports,
buried by some Iraqis close to the place of attack....

The U.S.? Swamp
BY TUFAN TURENC

-?The US can?t possibly ensure control in Iraq in this
situation. The violence will gradually escalate.?

HURRIYET - The US is paying the price for the violent
policies of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his
underlings. It won?t be able to escape from the
quagmire it?s gotten stuck in. That swamp will
ultimately be the downfall of US President George W.
Bush and Rumsfeld. In an ironic twist, Japanese Prime
Minister Junichiro Koizumi this week requested help
from visiting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan for the release of Japanese hostages in Iraq.
If the Republican People?s Party (CHP) had voted for
the proposal to deploy Turkish soldiers in Iraq back
in March, most probably now Erdogan himself would be
seeking foreign help for the release of Mehmetciks. I
wonder if Erdogan thought of this. The ruling Justice
and Development Party (AKP) is very lucky. It escaped
from the swamp just before stepping in. Actually the
entire nation is lucky because of this.

Recently retired Gen. Ilhan Kilic told me this about
the Iraq issue: ?If foreign forces occupying a country
don?t get the support of 80% of the locals, they won?t
be able to establish control of the country. This is
the primary rule of the issue. What?s more, it?s the
US which laid down this rule.? However, the US did
just the opposite in Iraq, flouting the strategy they
taught the world. Kilic added, ?The US can?t possibly
ensure control in Iraq in this situation. The violence
will gradually escalate.? Figures show the seriousness
of the situation: More than 800 Iraqi civilians have
died in conflicts since the beginning of this month.
Bush confessed the difficulty of the situation by
saying, ?I pray we?ll have fewer losses.? This is the
price of following the policies of violence-soaked
Rumsfeld.

IRAQI WAR BAD BUNGLE: RUSSIA'S FOREIGN MINISTER

MOSCOW - US armed action in Iraq - unilateral and
unauthorised by the United Nations - was a bad bungle.
Russia thought so from the start, and sticks to its
opinion to this day. Life has proved the point - the
war is taking more lives with every passing day,
Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister, said to newsmen after
conference with members of the State Duma,
parliament's lower house. As Russia sees it, Iraqi
developments require settlement efforts thoroughly
reappraised, he added.

Russia begins Iraq evacuation

Russia has started to evacuate former Soviet citizens
from Iraq amid a wave of kidnappings targeting
foreigners, a diplomat said.

"A first group of between 150 and 200 people left
aboard a plane this morning at 7:00am (local time)
heading to Moscow," said diplomat Dimitri Iline.

Five Ukrainians and three Russians were held hostage
for around 24 hours earlier this week before being
released without harm.

US-led coalition officials have said around 40
foreigners are being detained by Iraqi insurgents, who
are demanding the withdrawal of international troops
from the country.
