Re: [A-List] New Left Review
Lou writes:
When I was at the Socialist Scholars Conference in NYC a couple of years
ago, I asked Tariq Ali why the NLR ran an interview with Jorge Castaneda,
Foreign Minister in Vicente Fox's rightwing government and renegade from
Marxism. He replied that the NLR provides a forum for all sorts of
non-Marxist opinions.

I suppose this means that Ali gets access to the high-powered tv debates
that would otherwise deny him access. He also gets work from the BBC, having
been, in the past (and the present?), a presenter of the late night BBC2
"Despatch Box" programme that also features the execrable Andrew "Brillo
Pad" Neill.
An exposure of the NLR is long overdue. Mark had plenty of interesting views
on this journal which cost him some friendships on the net because of the
understandable desire of some to promote greater unity and tolerance of
diversity, married to a distaste for dealing with the implications of such
views. Unfortunately it is all too apparent that too many wrong choices have
been made by the people at its helm, and this is enough to call into
question the soundness of their judgement, if not more fundamental issues of
what, exactly, is NLR for?
