When I was at the Socialist Scholars Conference in NYC a couple of years
ago, I asked Tariq Ali why the NLR ran an interview with Jorge Castaneda,
Foreign Minister in Vicente Fox's rightwing government and renegade from
Marxism. He replied that the NLR provides a forum for all sorts of
non-Marxist opinions. I suspect that Castaneda's concept of "civil society"
meshed with NLR's but left it at that. I think that somebody should write a
lengthy expose of this journal someday. If I could find the time, I'd do it
myself. I am particularly interested in finding out why Ellen Meiksins Wood
got booted off the editorial board.
