this does seem to be a crucial distinction between europe and
america.  (though being raised an athiest, i was unaware that southern
baptists had an expurgated bible - is this really the case!?  wow.)  samir
amin recently wrote a piece called "the american ideology" which explained
some of this.  not sure if all his conclusions or facts were correct, but
the general theme corroborates my experiences and observations, being a
non-white american and having travelled abroad.
