[A-List] UK military: Iraq atrocities
Black Watch inquiry
ALISON HARDIE
The Scotsman, 4 June 2003
SOLDIERS from the Black Watch have been questioned by war crimes
investigators over the deaths of two Iraqis in detention, it was disclosed
last night.
Men from the regiment face allegations that the two civilians died after
being mistreated. According to a report yesterday, the Iraqis died at a
detention centre in the southern Iraqi city of Basra after being "roughed
up".
The Ministry of Defence said last night that an inquiry by the military
police's Special Investigation Branch was under way.
It was reported that the SIB would be checking whether proper medical
procedures had been in place.
The latest claims of brutality come after the controversial accusations of
ill-treating Iraqis against Colonel Tim Collins, whose eve-of-battle speech
won praise in Britain and the United States.
