Re: [A-List] Re: Iraq Debts Add Up to Trouble

Henry,
The ambassador in question, April Glaspie, provided
an ambiguous response to Saddam when he raised the
matter with her. He interpreted her response, which was
not very well thought out, as "condoning." This was more
a matter of miscommunication. Saddam heard what he
wanted to hear. But, I fully agree that the (senior) Bush
White House should have made it clearer to April Glaspie
that she should have made it clearer what their position was.

This is the cover story, but is it credible?
Saddam had been working with these guys for the previous decade. He didn't
ask Donald?
There was no military attache in Baghdad?
The Glaspie interview was just before the war.It beggars belief that it was
the first such message he had sought, or received from his late sponsors.

Kuwait was slant-drilling at Rumaylah
and over-selling its quota by 60%.The Arab League was aware of this, and
publicly puzzled by the intransigence of Kuwait as Saddam rattled his saber
at the border.
It is also naive to imagine this Emir
risking confrontation with Iraq without having a word or two with his
sponsors, namely these same United States.

This was an operation by the National security state to :

    a) Locate bases, for the first time, in the Middle East
    b) end the "peace dividend" pressure in Congress
    c) re-habilitate the Military in the public mind, and
    d) Provide a major service to Israel.

By then leaving Saddam in power, and actually facilitating this outcome,
they "put him on ice" to serve as the bogeyman once again, (thus starting
two wars for the cost of one demonization.)
Now we are seeing the attempt to realize this long-term investment.
