Re: [A-List] the second Super Power
Chris,
While an owl is a symbol of wisdom in
the west, over here in east we consider it as a foolish animal. 'Ulloo' in Urdu
is an offensive term. As such terming Bush as an owl is pretty
apt.
I once noticed a well educated
eagle was released after a prey, crows from nearby thicket in hundreds
attacked it, resultantly the eagle lost its bearings and was not seen by the
owner.
The political turn of mind has come
about because of excessive arm twisting by the US. Similarly voters turned to
religous political groups after the Islamabad regime was made to adopt an about
turn policy after 9/11.
Dawn arrives when the night turns
real dark. The best part of injustice is, it begins to crumble when it reaches
the peak. Yes, now is the time. We must all thanks Bush and his
team.

That Super Power is us

Well said. And not
lightly.
In nature when a dominant predator like an owl threatens
a large number of potential victims, such as smaller birds, they may mob it -
surround and taunt it, trying to minimise the damage to themselves
individually, but keeping sight of one another. This can neutralise and
even tire the predator into giving up.
What we are beginning
to see is that under pressure of a global movement, some governments feel
they have to respond by resisting US diktat. This is threatening to stall and
divert Bush's strategy for world hegemony.
While the markets might
not object to a quick victory, they dislike uncertainty. They are beginning
to blame Bush for the downturn since his "axis of evil" speech. Probably
unfairly. And let us not overstate what is happening. This is a mass global
democratic movement which is starting to have an impact, but admittedly
through one section of the finance capitalism playing off against another.
Global finance capitalism basically wants more stability than the crude
hegemonistic antics of the Bush clique.
But longer term the power
of the global movement and its internationalism is what is
important.
And the events in Turkey yesterday, were one of the
most exciting breakthroughs in that process. We cannot be sure of how events
will unfold, but my guess is it will be written up in the history books as the
decisive
turning point.
