Re: [A-List] Eastern rationality
Many thanks to Sabri for his introduction to the beauty of the thought
and words of the mediaeval Sufi mystic, Yunus Emre. Such humanism and
tolerance were not unknown in his day, and Sabri provides a welcome
corrective to the ignorant prejudices of the Whig interpretation of
history which with its paranoid Hobbesian view of human nature is the
basis of "the white man's burden" which George Bush is today bearing
with such fortitude in Iraq. Walter Benjamin began the critique of it,
but it is unfortunately still shared by too many on the left as an
interpretation of Marx's thought. A wonderful corrective to that is
Scott Meikle's collection of essays on Marx -- *Marx*, Aldershot,
Ashgate, 2000 -- which draws out the full implications of the
Aristotelian basis of Marx's thought.
