Re: [A-List] Cyprus: This country is ours rally!

Sabri,

I pray you are right and my fears are wrong. Though I myself am no
pessimist. I don't know what is your age but I vividly recollect scenes of
massacre of Cypriot Turks in late 50s and early 60s.

You said, Turks and Greeks in North America mix well. So do we Pakistanis
and Indians when outside the sub-continent are friendly on personal basis.
But as members of our communities, placed in the indigenous environs, we
return to the old habits. Remember, Gujrat and Kshmir.

History lies very heavily on most people, some can forget it, for the time
being they wait out, till an ooportune moment arrives. Maybe I am wrong.

Tariq

PS. Your friend Annisur-Rehman Khan was not much wrong, Pakistanis and Turks
are very close ethnically. Our origin was the same, only you moved west and
we came south. The feeling remains the same.

  Sabri,

I am not that pessimistic. Believe it or not, but we Greeks and Turks get
along quite well, especially when we meet here in North America. The peoples
of Greece and Turkey are so similar culturally and emotionally that it has
always been a puzzle to me why there has been this stupid "hatred" between
these two countries. I don't think religion can be an explanation to that
either because although they believe in Jesus and we believe in Allah, even
the ways we believe in our respective Gods are so similar.

I remember a movie I watched many years ago, "Mediterranean" its name was
if I am not wrong, and in one of the scenes, a few Italians, Greeks and
Turks were together, smoking something like marijuana or some such thing and
one of them, I guess one of the
Italians, said this about these three:

 "One face, one race."

What could that stupid thing be?

 Best,
 Sabri

PS: By the way, one of my very good friends during my engineering school
days many years ago was a Pakistani poet by the name of Anisurrahman Khan,
who used to tell me that if I went to Pakistan, everybody would think that I
was a Pakistani. And whenever I go to Mexico, they speak to me in Spanish.
And a few Brazilians thought I was a Brazilian. And ...
