Re: [A-List] The War After Iraq - Is it better for a prince to be loved or feared?
I think it is most interesting that Tariq rather automatically refers to
the US as "white Christian." The fact that this impression prevails abroad
should tell us something. For those outside the US, especially in the
global south, I can only remind them that three out of 10 of us haven't
been inducted into whiteness (a concept that shifts with our social
evolution). There is no doubt that our ruling class is "white" and
exclusively male-led, and that a signficant portion of our white "middle
class" and working class is motivated by racial self-interest. (The
article Mark forwarded on fascism should be studied very carefully...
thanks, Mark) The perception of white Christendom being confronted with
another Crusade (though certainly a coded notion) underwrites much of the
now weakening but still signficant public support of the Bush Doctrine.
But the point I want to put out there now is that these three out of 10
here in the US exist in a very "colonial" relation to the self-same (white
capitalist) hegemon who is the author of fear and hatred abroad (and don't
take Stratfor TOO seriously... they are a think tank of doddering generals
and spooks who keep the Scotch industry afloat). While there are many
unresolved contradictions in our own movement building in the US,
especially as it relates to oppressed peoples and oppressed nationalities,
the material reality of Black and Brown in the US joins their interests
directly with those who are fighting imperialism in the global south. I
hope this forum and others will intentionally and aggressively serve to
construct lines of comunication between those who are under exterminist
imperialism's heel and those who live in the belly of this beast. For
reasons too lengthy to go into here, I can say with some confidence that
any movement in the US that challenges the system successfully in the long
term will be led by Black and Brown people. If it's not, it will falter,
as our history has shown us too many times to count. DuBois' color line
remains our front line.
