[A-List] Some developments

Pay attention.  Some big things are happening.

One of them is that Lucio Gutierrez just won the presidential election in Ecuador.  That's the country between Colombia and Peru, where the US already has concerns - recent popular uprisings in Peru, and oh yeah, a revolutionary civil war in Colombia, which borders Venezuela, a country presided over by a populist-nationalist former military person (Hugo Chavez).  Gutierrez is another potential Chavez in the region, like Chavez a mixed race (Ecuador's ruling elite, like Venzuela's is notoriously white supremacist) person with humble beginnings, who has the loyalty of a significant portion of the nation's armed forces.  Gutierrez participated in a popular uprising that ousted Jamil Mahuad, in 2000. Like Chavez, he spent some time in jail, only to come back with immense popularity.  All this in the wake of Lula's election in Brazil.  This is likely giving the Bushfeld Junta, and the IMF-WB, some very scary dreams.

Of course, the anti-Saudi work is proceeding apace in DC.  They really should understand by now that after Iraq, they're next.  No way will our ruling Junta stand by and watch Wahabbists take over there.

But back to our hemisphere, Ben Dupuy of the Haitian National Popular Party recently warned that the US was planning to use the Dominicans as a surrogate occupation force... because Haiti is again on the brink of a national uprising, this time against the macoutes, the comprador-technocrats, AND Aristide's co-opted Lavalas Family.  Jan 1, 2004 is the revolutionary bicentennial, and even though blanc wants to dismiss Haitians in public, he is rightfully frightened by angry Haitian masses. Sure enough, in today's paper, we read that the US is giving the Dominican Republic a massive injection of military aid to protect it from Haitian threats... even though Haiti has no army.  They claim it is an immigartion issue, but the real issue is popular rebellion.  Almost 1000 US troops will assist the Dominicans in this huge refit.  Of course, if the US wants to guarantee the most furious response possible from Haitians, it would be by authorizing a Dominican invasion of Haiti, where people have suffered for generations at the hands of US-supported Dominicans.  Pretty soon, we will hear that Haitians are in league with al Qaeda.

Stay tuned...
