[A-List] France/UK corporate secret state
Observer
Financial Times, November 13 2002
Spooky
What is it about Marks and Spencer and the intelligence services? Alain
Juillet, the former head of the retailer's now defunct French operations,
has taken a top job at the DGSE (France's CIA).
It's a bit of a career change for the 59-year-old. Juillet, a corporate
restructuring expert, was drafted in by M & S last year to defuse the
political row provoked by its handling of the store closures. He previously
worked for consumer groups including Pernod Ricard and Jacobs Suchard.
Still, if he wants tips about how to be a spook he need look no further than
his erstwhile colleague Dame Stella Rimington. The M & S non-exec was, of
course, former head of MI5.
