Is this the same "Sir" Allan Green who had to resign as Director of Public
Prosecutions because he was caught kerb crawling in London?
Bloody Sunday soldier 'a fantasist'
By Helen William
The Independent, 23 October 2002
The former soldier who told the Bloody Sunday inquiry how British
paratroopers shot 13 unarmed civil rights marchers without justification was
described yesterday as a "fantasy merchant" cashing in on the tragedy.
Sir Allan Green QC, representing several of the paratroopers, said that
soldier 027's 1975 account of the events of 30 January 1972 in Londonderry
was "so unreliable that it is worthless".
The account of the former radio operatorwith the 1st Battalion of the
Parachute Regiment of the bloodshed in Bogside was crucial in convincing the
Government to hold a second public inquiry.
The 1972 Widgery inquiry largely exonerated the paratroopers, finding they
had fired in self-defence.
Sir Allan dissected soldier 027's 1975 memoir in which he described a
paratrooper executing a marcher in cold blood, unjustified shootings of
people whom he believed were not a threat, and efforts by soldiers to cover
their tracks.
He picked out discrepancies in the account that soldier 027 could not
explain, describing them as lies, embellishments or fantasy. Sir Allan told
027: "You are a fantasy merchant, aren't you? Selling fantasies in the way
that has been examined in your evidence?"
Sir Allen suggested the account included "malicious tales" about other
soldiers, triggering strong denials from soldier 027.
The inquiry, sitting in London, continues today.

CPS names new boss
David Calvert-Smith will begin the restructuring of the CPS
The new Director of Public Prosecutions has been named as David
Calvert-Smith, QC, one of the country's most senior prosecutors.
He will replace Dame Barbara Mills as head of the Crown Prosecution Service
in England and Wales from 1 November.
Dame Barbara announced in May she would be stepping down early from the
post, leaving a successor to implement a planned restructuring of the
service based on 42 regional areas.
Her announcement came just weeks before publication of the Glidewell Report,
which attacked the service's record on efficiency and effectiveness.
Appointment predicted
Mr Calvert-Smith, 53, had been tipped as a likely candidate to replace Dame
Barbara.
Currently chairman of the Criminal Bar Association, he has regularly
prosecuted in homicide, organised crime and fraud cases - including the
prosecution against footballer Bruce Grobbelaar, who was cleared of
match-fixing charges.
He will be charged with overseeing a radical overhaul of the CPS, the body
responsible for prosecuting offenders.
Mr Calvert-Smith will be the third person to head the service in its 12-year
existence. The first Director of Public Prosecutions, Sir Allan Green,
resigned after allegedly being spotted kerb-crawling in King's Cross in
London.
The Attorney General's Office said a total of 18 people had submitted
applications for the £116,000-a-year post and Mr Calvert-Smith was selected
from a shortlist of five.
