[A-List] Moderator's note: extraneous text
I'm forwarding this message from Lou Proyect, originally posted to PEN-L but
just as relevant here, especially given Hans Ehrbar's hosting of our archive
and our desire to encourage participation by those in less affluent
societies:
I would urge Jim Devine to clip extraneous text. His 2 sentence reply was
appended to a 36K article, an obvious waste of bandwidth. Perhaps I am a
little bit more sensitive to these questions now that Marxmail is being
archived on Hans Ehrbar's computer at U. of Utah, along with a number of
other leftwing email lists, including PEN-L--as far as I know. Since Hans's
computer hard-drive was nearly filled up, I sent him a 30 gig hard-drive to
keep things going.
My suspicion is that bandwidth is much less of an issue for PEN-L where the
average subscriber seems to be a professor with a university T-1
connection. But if you are a dial-up subscriber in some place like Turkey
or Argentina, where PEN-L discussions would be particularly relevant, the
costs can mount up when you are faced with multiple 35K messages per day,
especially when they consist of extraneous information.
