Carleton-Smith in control
By Peter Thal Larsen
Financial Times; Sep 09, 2002
Control Risks, the corporate security and investigations company, has
named Andreas Carleton-Smith as president and chief executive in North
America.
The appointment of Carleton-Smith, a veteran of the UK's Special Air
Service, comes as Control Risks moves to capitalise on increased demand
for its services following the terrorist attacks of September 11.
During his military career, Carleton-Smith commanded elements of the
UK's counter-terrorist team. He was also awarded the Military Cross for
gallantry in the former Republic of Yugoslavia.
Carleton-Smith, who is now based in Los Angeles, said his aim was to
expand Control Risks' presence in the fields of crisis management,
security consulting, investigations and fraud prevention.
All four areas have undergone significant growth in the US in the past
year as companies have become more concerned about protecting their
workers from possible attacks. .
Originally founded in London, Control Risks has been expanding its US
presence for several years. But despite the pressure for consolidation
in the business, the company has so far retained its independence.
Carleton-Smith, who joined Control Risks in 1997, was previously senior
vice-president of operations overseeing the company's crisis management
and security consulting operations in North America.
He will continue to be based in LA but plans to spend about one week
each month at the company's New York and Washington offices.
