Re: [A-List] US imperialism: a Clintonian view

I have a very hard time believing that the writers of these columns still
actually believe themselves that the shell-game side show of who is hiding what
weapons where is really what is being debated.

Henry Kissinger has been making the case fro "thwarting" Saddam. Now, while he
does need to pay lip-service to the weapons gambit-game, in reality he argues
that this is needed because of the entirely new set of international relations
to be set out by such an attack. He retreets back to the 1600's to where
"self-defence" became the only acceptable form of military assault, and talks of
the "beauty" of over-turning the "outdated" nation that one state cannot be
guilty before it acts.

Now, me thinks that all this talk about "sea-change" in international relations
doesn't take into account enough of the "de-facto" goings on of the last decade
or so (if not far more!!), yet we continue, as has been our lot, to look at each
of these episodes of imperial advance too disconnectedly since the day the
towers fell. Nonsense, I tells ya...it's a part of a much greater plan and we
ought to be doing our best to uncover it.

The recent sabre-rattling re: Saudi Arabia goes a long way towards the thesis
that the Empire has decided to mop up the entire region, and fuck any and all
"stability" in the short term-- it appears preferrable to the imperialists that
they have direct control over the vital interests and this includes, well,
everything in the area. That would change the tenor (as much as the operation)
of all Mid East foreign policy so drastically that the reason for so many cold
feet even amongst the Republicans starts from that-- not some abstract
allegiance to eith European allies nor international law.

The democratic states are on the march... are we watching only the front end of
the procession?
