[A-List] British takeover of Europe: Hain again

Here's the increasingly sinister Peter Hain once again, pushing an ever
more populist line as part of a multi-faceted strategy to

1) improve the image of the EU in Britain by
2) being seen to direct the agenda of the EU by
3) pandering to populist knee jerks but camouflaging these by reference
to
4) a solid history of anti-racist campaigning in order to appeal to the
left of the Labour Party and to deflect criticisms that Hain is somehow
racist

Hain urges Europe-wide sex offenders register

Tuesday May 21, 2002
The Guardian

European Union countries should follow the example of Britain and set up
a register of paedophiles and sex offenders, the Europe minister, Peter
Hain, will say today in a speech calling for far greater EU cooperation
on justice and home affairs issues, writes Patrick Wintour.

Talks within the EU on a common definition of sex offenders and child
pornography have been bogged down in legal minutiae for over a year. A
common list of offenders would make it easier for police forces to warn
other EU states if a high risk paedophile was travelling. With the free
movement of people within the EU, it is in practice difficult to follow
potential offenders.

In a speech in Birmingham Mr Hain will also call for greater cooperation
to deal with illegal asylum seekers and drug traffickers.
