Re: [A-List] barter is a blind
ewc:
Well, I certainly wasn't quoting the Bible in those remarks!
Though the economics of the Bible is a fascinating subject,
and one I want to study, esp. on the subject of usory. (I like
very much the notion of the jubilee, which allows for the
cancellation of debts on the 7th year if I recall correctly. The
problem of long term debt is huge, its consequences degenerate
on all fronts for both lender and borrower.)
The point I was trying to make is that the demonization of
money per se is a mistake, and that "money" was a great advance
for mankind as was the wheel. (And speaking of the Bible, I
believe that is the message for it is not money, but the love of
it that is the root of all evil - a hard point to argue with, and I
don't.)
But clearly I made that point badly, since I quite agree that my
pragmatic definition of money sold the subject "short." Money
is fascinating, so many facets to it, and layer upon layer of meaning
and consequence -- and much mystery to it as well.
Thanks for the tip regarding "Origins of Coins," and additional
excellent points. I shall read Wray's treatment eagerly, and am
off to search for it now.
Anne
