[A-List] Unimpeachable source

More conjecture masquerading as hard news, illustrating once more how
quick some journalists are to act as, in the words of E.P. Thompson,
public urinals for the intelligence services.

Al Qaeda moves funds

IAN BRUCE
The Herald, 18 March 2002

OSAMA bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network has
begun moving funds around the world in what US
intelligence agencies see as evidence that the
organisation is trying to regroup and finance new
      attacks on the West.

A CIA source said "a significant boost in money
transfers" had been detected in the last week and
there were indications that "leadership is active
      once more".

There has also been a substantial increase in
internet traffic from towns on Pakistan's northwest
frontier to suspected terrorist cells in the Middle
East, the Far East and Europe.

Al Qaeda made extensive use of e-mail and
camouflaged websites to pass instructions to its
agents before September 11 after learning that its
mobile and satellite phone communications could
be monitored and even used to target missile
      attacks.

Only a handful of the 25 al Qaeda senior
commanders on the US State Department's
most-wanted list have been killed or captured. The
whereabouts of bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahri, Abu
Zubaydah, and Mustafa Ahmed al-Hisawi, are
      unknown.
