[A-List] At last a good one, Jorge!
The article by Miguel Urbano Rodrigues that Jorge has just sent to the list is
quite more accurate, and probes deeper in our concrete reality, than the ones
that he sent before. It must be very hard to find reliable information on what
is going on down here, so that this is to Jorge's merit.
There is just a single part of the article that can be contested. Alas, it is a
fraction of the concluding remarks. So that I will take a couple of seconds to
put some interrogation mark on what looks to me like too taxative a statement.
Rodrigues writes:
"A adesão à greve geral traduziu a disponibilidade das massas para a
luta. "
This is not quite true. There was no such support to the general strike, which
was declared too late by a union leadership that was taken by surprise by the
events. I went to strike, for example, but I was not one-of-many, I was quite
isolated in my office.
A couple of lines later:
"Não haverá, porem, revolução na Argentina, por incapacidade de
mobilização organizada do potencial revolucionário das massas. Sem
partido ou movimento revolucionário forte, com implantação popular,
sem um projecto alternativo, não ha revolução possível. O presidente
da transição, Adolfo Rodriguez é um homem honesto. Governador da
Provincia de San Luis, reeleito em quatro mandatos sucessivos, fez
muitas promessas. Mas não as poderá cumprir."
This depends very much on whether he looks for popular support by displaying an
energetic resolution in curbing the resistence of reaction or not. Of course,
this would imply to non-formalistic methods, to call for mass gatherings and so
on. But I feel that this time all that can be done. And Rodríguez Saá, luckily
enough, comes from a Conservative origin, that is, he is no custard pie that
the multinationals will tread upon easily.
"A democracia representativa argentina é uma farsa. Temos a prova disso no
facto de Menem, líder do Partido Justicialista e um dos grandes responsáveis
pela tragédia do país já ter anunciado que será candidato à Presidência nas
eleições de 3 de Março."
This is a stupid mistake by the journalist. Menem simply cannot utter such a
declaration (which he didn't), he can't return to appear as a candidate before
2003, that is, after a whole presidential period has elapsed between his
administration and the new polls. In fact, Menem is one of the political
corpses that have been buried by the mobilisations. No Peronist leader will
allow the Evil Criminal to return. This is the simply arithmetics of their
politics. Menem is no menace.
But, true, Argentinean "democracy" has been a formality for almost twenty
years. However this character comes down from the fact that this "democracy",
imposed by the British frigates and not by the Argentinean masses, has been a
_colonial_ democracy. Rodríguez Saá has never accepted such a kind of a
democracy, and it is my impression that he may be considering the possibility
that this democracy can be made reasonable only by beginning to address the
basic issues: foreign debt, unemployment, redeployment of Argentinean industry.
This will bring him to clash, very soon, with the real origins of the ailments
in our democracy, that is the multinational corporations, the financial sector,
and the Spanish-owned public utilities. This "rosca" will be his first trial.
If he confronts with them bravely and boldly, then people will be with him. And
in such a case, then many different things can happen. A Sanmartinian
Argentina may begin to join a Bolivarian Venezuela. And, who knows,
Sanmartinians and Bolivarians will meet in Ecuador, just as we did during the
Wars of Independence.
A hug,
