[A-List] A common Argentinean answers to Chris B.
This has shown up on an e-greeting for New Years Eve that I have just received.
It was drafted in haste by a publisher who specializes in the history of
Argentinean visual arts and the media. The publishing house is, of course,
facing default and bankrupcy, though in a cheerful mood that is usual here ("if
there's misery, let it not be seen" is a very common Argentinean saying). That
is, just an ordinary reasonably brought up Argentinean middle class person.
First in Spanish, then in English.
Todo apuntaba a que como argentinos
desapareciéramos lenta y penosamente.
Los últimos acontecimientos abren la esperanza
de que podamos ganar o perder.
O como mínimo obtener un honroso empate.
Everything was showing us Argentineans the way
to slow and painful disappearance.
The last events open up a hope
that we may win or lose.
Or at the very least to obtain a honorable tie.
